All About Montessori Training Material

The educational philosophy of Montessori states that children will naturally teach themselves and each other when put in a nurturing environment. And that, that environment must have been scientifically designed to help them learn. This philosophy, as well as the very first Montessori school, was created about a century ago by the first woman to ever become a doctor in Italy, Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori does not refer to a specific type of teaching materials, however, certain materials are used to teach children in this way.

Montessori classrooms are always arranged in a way that allows students to move around freely rather than being confined to their desks. There are specific areas such as animal care, gardening, reading, cooking, cleaning, and more. Children learn subjects like math, science, language, literature, geography, music, and art. In a Montessori classroom, children are placed in groups of children ranging in age by three years. For example, a 3 year old and a 6 year old would be in the same class, as would a 12 year old and a 15 year old.

The specific Montessori training material that your child will require will depend on various factors. One such factor is your child's age. From birth to age six, a child learns by interacting with his or her environment. Thus, training materials should reflect this as such. For children ages six to twelve, the focus is on paring down the environment so the children are free to create. For children ages twelve to eighteen, education becomes more standard and traditional. Items like books and computers are common training materials at this stage. This stage helps the child learn to thrive in the outside world.

Often parents need to purchase their own materials because they've decided to homeschool using the Montessori method. Contrary to popular belief, these materials are not overly expensive and most homeschooling parents can easily afford everything they need to educate their children effectively.

One training material you won't need is a television. The Montessori method frowns on television as a learning tool because it prevents children from learning in a creative, hands-on way.
