Finding a Toronto Montessori School
![]() |
You are lucky if you live in the Toronto area, and are thinking about sending your kid to a Montessori school. There are a variety of Toronto Montessori school centers and facilities for you to choose from here. Although these schools may differ in areas like tuition cost and location, they all operate under the Montessori educational philosophy. If you're wondering whether a Toronto Montessori school is right for your child, it helps to understand more about what Montessori schools entail.
The very first Montessori school was developed in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy's first female doctor. Dr. Montessori took charge of fifty desolate children and placed them in her casa dei bambini, or children's house. At this children's house, she discovered that when placed in a supportive, nurturing environment, children will naturally strive to educate themselves and each other.
The Montessori philosophy is based around the fact that children learn by doing. At a Toronto Montessori school, your child will learn by experiencing and creating. Children are given educational freedom by being provided with a number of stations where they can move about freely. These stations feature such concepts as animal care, cooking, cleaning, language, mathematics, science, music, art and more.
One practice that makes Montessori schools different from other facilities is the practice of grouping children into three year age groups. This provides children to interact with peers of different ages, which is how things are in the real world. The younger children learn from the older children, and the older children learn the value and importance of teaching the younger ones.
There are Montessori day care centers, boarding houses, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. These different facilities often operate independent from one another. Sometimes however, one facility will offer all these different programs. Most parents that start their children off in a Montessori day care end up enrolling them in a Montessori school for the remainder of their education.
What you can expect to pay for a Montessori education will depend on various factors such as your child's age and the program they are enrolled in. At your intial consultation with a school, you can find out the tuition rates and also if there are any scholarships or financial aid programs available.
